Obituary of Shirley Jane Mellow

Shirley Jane Howarth Popple-Mellow, 90, of West Pittston, passed away Tuesday morning January 7th, 2025 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Olyphant, she was a daughter of the late Odiss C. and Lillian Soderlund Howarth.  She was a graduate of Olyphant High School.  

Shirley early on worked at Tobyhanna Army Depot and then married Anthony M. Popple and they started a family together.   Shirley then became the caretaker for her children and enjoyed every minute of it.

She also enjoyed going to the Pittston Senior Center and playing Bingo with her friends and enjoying meals.   At the center they would also do crafts and crocheting.  Shirley loved to make and share all of her afgans with family and friends. 

Shirley was preceded in death by her first husband Anthony M. Popple in 2000, and then Richard Mellow in 2015, she was also the youngest of 9 children and she was the last remaining sibling from her family.   Also preceded her in death was a daughter, Karen Weed, and a granddaughter, Amanda Josephine Weed.

She is survived by her children, Toni Joy Granteed and husband Ronald, West Pittson, Anita Popple, West Pittston, Grandchildren, Thomas Obrzut, West Pittston, Mark Obrzut (Lucy), West Pittston, Jocelyn Williams, West Pittston, Joshua Granteed, West Pittston, Jacob Granteed, West Pittston, Gabrielle Granteed, West Pittston, Matthew Bohn, Scranton, and Hannah Bohn, Wyoming, 6 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing for Shirley on Monday January 13th,2025 from 10am. until 12pm. At the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home Inc., 509 Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston.  Private interment will be in the West Pittston Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Hospice of the Sacred Heart in Dunmore for their kindness and compassion during this most difficult time.    The family would also like her loving and devoted caregivers who took care of Shirley for the past three and a half years and they are Jocelyn, Hannah, Patty and Diane.
