Nancy J. Smiles, 84, of West Pittston, passed away peacefully Friday evening, December
30, 2022, at Highland Manor Nursing Home, Exeter.
She was born in Pittston, the daughter of the late Joseph and Jean Myers Smiles.
Nancy was also preceded in death by her sister Jean Butterfield, Waukesha, Wisconsin.
Surviving are her brother, R. Nelson Smiles (Phyllis), Wyoming; sister, H. Roberta
Gilmore, Cincinnati, Ohio; and seven nieces and nephews.
Nancy was a graduate of West Pittston High School and Philadelphia College of Bible
(now Cairn University, Langhorne, Pa.). In addition, she did post-graduate study in the
field of linguistics. She was also a gifted pianist/organist.
For five years she served as a linguist/missionary in Ghana with Wycliffe Bible
Translators.
Upon return from Africa, she continued her Christian service on a part-time basis at
Grace Bible Church (formerly Grace Presbyterian Church), West Pittston, and with other
Evangelical groups while caring for her elderly mother on a long-term basis.
She was employed for many years as office assistant with Joseph E. Piszczek MD, Main
Street, Plymouth, until his retirement.
Moving to the Garden Village Apartments, she joined the Valley Alliance Church,
Luzerne Avenue, West Pittston, and was invigorated by the Christian fellowship and
kindness she found there.
With Highland Manor compassionate care and the Valley Alliance spiritual support,
Nancy passed peacefully to the eternal care of the Lord.
Arrangements are being handled by the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home, Inc., 509 Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston.
Funeral Services are private and will be held at the convenience of the family. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
