Sara A. Murtha, 92, of Jenkins Twp., passed away Wednesday October 18th, 2023 after a short stay in Highland Manor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation, Exeter surrounded by her family.
Born in Pittston, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Camella “Nellie” Baiera Tuttilmond and was a graduate of the Pittston High School Class of 1948. She was a former member of St. Rocco’s Church, Pittston and with the church closing, she became a member of St. Joseph Marello Parish, Pittston.
She started her working career at the Social Security Administration in Wilkes-Barre. She later transferred to the Department of Labor, Black Lung Division until her retirement in 1989.
Sara Loved to Cook, bake, entertain guests, and loved spending time with her family. Family was very important to her. She also loved traveling the world with her late husband. Sara enjoyed extended stays visiting her daughter in the Netherlands, United Kingdom, France, Philippines, Brazil and Ecuador.
Sara was preceded in death by her husband Thomas “Skippy” Murtha in 2008, infant sister, Carmella, sisters Carmelita Maria and Leona Capitano and brother in laws, Sam Maira and Michael Capitano.
She is survived by her children, Thomas Murtha and wife Shelia, Exeter, Mary Ellen Schulze and husband Ernst, London, United Kingdom, grandchildren, Jennifer Dougherty and husband Brian, Jessica Turner and husband Michael, Ernst, Samuel and Thomas Schulze, great-grandchildren, Michael and Cole Turner, Vincenzo Dougherty and Viviana Dougherty, sister, Mary Lou Fitzpatrick and husband James, Pittston, and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Ann, Bayada Home Health and also Sara’s neighbors, Rich and Bonnie Lanzendorfer.
The Funeral will be held on Friday morning at 9am. from the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home Inc., 509 Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am. in St. Joseph Marello Parish at 237 William Street, Pittston with Monsignor John Sempa as the celebrant. Interment will follow in the West Pittston Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Thursday from 4pm. until 7pm. at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers may be made on Sara’s name to the donor’s choice.
