Obituary of Sally A. Walsh

Please share a memory of Sally to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Sally A. Walsh, 95, of Brentwood, NY, formerly of Pittston, passed away Wednesday February 21st, 2024.

Born in Pittston she was a daughter of the late Leo and Constance Dougher Burns and was a graduate of the Jenkins High School.   After High school she went on to the Pittston Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated with her Nursing degree.  She also received a Bachelor’s degree from Hunter College.

She always told great stories about living in a brownstone with her friends while working at St. John’s.

Sally and her husband Dick bought their home in Brentwood in 1957.  She worked nights as a nurse and bowled on a lady’s team in the evening.  Between her and her friends, Irene and Stella, they had eyes on every kid in the neighborhood.  She loved her friends at the Brentwood homemakers.  If they were not having party they were on a bus to Atlantic City, bringing the party with them.

Sally was always bringing family and friends together.  She started the annual tradition of the Philharmonic at Heckscher Park.  Cars packed with kids, strollers, and coolers listening to classical music.  Sally put love into everything she did, from crafting custom cakes for her grandchildren, teaching them how to cook, crochet and spread kindness everywhere she went.  She was also the Go-to person for party supplies.  She’d loan out chairs, coolers, extension cords, and lights, and of course red solo cups too all with “Sally” written in black magic marker.  If you were lucky, she would swing by with a cake for the celebration.

Our love for her will continue to bring us all closer in her honor as we celebrate living life just as she did.  With love, kindness, and a nice cold coke!

Sally was preceded in death by her husband Richard, sisters, Regina Burns Wachs, Marion Burns, Helen Burns Wilver, Joan Burns Meade, Kathryn Burns Engleman, Mary Lou Burns, Constance Burns Strubeck, brothers, William and James Burns.

She is survived by her children, Mary Lou Walsh, Maura Walsh, Leo and Catherine Walsh, Richard and Cindy Walsh, Grandchildren, Jordan Foster, Nicole and Howard Zuo, David and Courtney Foster, Taylor Foster, Tyler Walsh, Megan Walsh and Jaclyn Walsh, sister-in-law, Eileen Burns, and several nieces and nephews.

The Funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 am. from the Howell-Lussi Funeral Home Inc., 509 Wyoming Avenue, West Pittston.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30am. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 35 William Street, Pittston.  Interment will be in the Parish Cemetery.  Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 5pm until 8pm at the Funeral Home.
