Obituary of Martin John Walsh
Martin “Marty” John Walsh, 76, of Pittston, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at Allied Hospice, Wilkes-Barre.
Born in Pittston on May 9, 1947, Marty was the son of the late Dr. Martin J. and Marjorie Connell Walsh. He was a graduate of St. John's high school.
After high school, Marty attended DeSales University and earned his bachelor's degree in Education. He continued his studies at Marywood University, where he received his master's degree in Education.
Marty devoted his career to helping and empowering others through education. He was employed at St. Michael's School for Boys before joining the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections as the Director of Education, a position which he held for over 30 years until his retirement.
While Marty was committed to helping others, his family was always his top priority. When his children were younger, he spent his weekends coaching their soccer and little league teams. His kids loved having their dad as their coach, and Marty enjoyed the added benefit of bragging rights that came from being the longest running winner of the County Cup for Stoners Soccer. His steadfast support of his children continued through adulthood, and his love for them, his stepchildren, and grandchildren was a constant presence in each of their lives.
Marty found a best friend in his wife, Katherine. When they weren't hosting pool parties or holiday dinners for their family, Marty and Katherine enjoyed traveling, attending concerts, and simply spending time together.
His favorite time of year was roughly August through February, when he got to watch Notre Dame and New York Giants football. Marty was a staunch supporter who never missed a game and never let a rough season shake his loyalty. His commentary of the game rivaled the best sports announcers.
Marty was preceded in death by his brother John Walsh in 2000.
He is survived by his wife Katherine Walsh, children, Heather Walsh, Chicago, Jason Walsh and companion Sheri Flannery, Philadelphia, Kerri DeMark and husband David, Pittston Twp., Brian Walsh, Pittston, grandchildren, Samantha Quigley, Avianna DeGennaro, Frankie Walsh, sister in law, Shelia Walsh, step children, Desiree Jantzen, PJ Schuler, Veronica Schuler, Chris Schuler, Stephany Huntington, step grandchildren Isaiah Carnahan, Mya Carnahan, Ruby Schuler, Ben Schuler, Samuel Schuler, Posie Schuler, Swade Schuler, and several nieces and nephews.
